The Lititz Woman’s Club is holding its third annual Kentucky Derby Day on Saturday, May 7. This event serves as the biggest fundraiser of the club year, and members welcome community support in attending this event. All who have been present in the past enjoyed a day of activity, food and beverages, and fun.

This year, the setting for Derby Day is the Bent Creek Country Club. Festivities begin at 4 p.m. and continue through 8 p.m.

Three preliminary races will begin at 4:45 p.m. and will prime participants for the actual Kentucky Derby, with a live broadcast, later. Guests will purchase play money in order to bet on these races with winnings going toward an auction of three special baskets. Guests will also place bets on the Kentucky Derby horses to win, place, or show. Following this exciting two-minute race, a live auction will take place as attendees bid on gift baskets donated by LWC members.

Attendees are encouraged to wear appropriate Kentucky Derby attire. In fact, women’s hats will be judged in two categories — homemade and purchased — with prizes awarded accordingly. Clemintine’s, a Lititz Main Street shop, has even ordered numerous hats that women may purchase and don for the event.

Again this year, the musical entertainment will be The Louisville Hot Walkers, led by Todd Fulginiti. The band has an appropriate name, in that a “hot walker” helps a horse cool down after a run. This talented band will certainly enliven the affair.

As of this year, the Lititz Woman’s Club is celebrating its 75th year anniversary of being a community service organization. Proceeds from this Kentucky Derby Day fundraiser return to “the coolest small town in America” and provide annual scholarships, but also extend to worthy causes beyond the town’s borders.

Those wishing to attend may purchase tickets from Shirley Flickinger (823-3326 or flick@ptd.net.). The cost is $55 per person, and the ticket price includes served hors d’oeuvres, a full buffet dinner, and a souvenir glass. A cash bar featuring special Derby refreshments will also be available.
